This was my second Wes Anderson movie after The Phoenician Scheme. I enjoyed it a lot! The movie follows an almost absurd plot about a hotel concierge being framed for a murder after being awarded a priceless painting from one of his hotel patrons. The movie is witty and funny, and the plot is simple. I originally gave the movie a 3.6/5 because of that. I thought it was fun and good, but not great.

However, I thought more about what the movie did well. The visuals have the signature Wes Anderson aspects that define his style. All of the scenes, backdrops and transitions feel intentional. The colours chosen were purposeful. There was even care when it came to using specific aspect ratios throughout the movie. I think all of that lends the movie to being at least a visually great movie, even if the plot was simple.

Therefore, I give the movie a 4.3/5. Next week’s movie is The Departed!
